Is your business ADA compliant?

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

As a property owner or manager, it is important to ensure that your parking lot is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes ensuring that there are designated parking spaces for individuals with disabilities, as well as proper striping and signage to identify these spaces.

According to the ADA, a minimum of one parking space for every 25 total spaces must be designated for individuals with disabilities. These spaces must be at least 8 feet wide and have an adjacent access aisle that is at least 5 feet wide. The access aisle should be marked with diagonal stripes to indicate that it is not a regular parking space.

In addition to the designated parking spaces, the ADA also requires that the spaces be clearly marked with signage. The signs should have the International Symbol of Accessibility, as well as the words "Van Accessible" if the space is designed for use by vans. The sign should be mounted at a height of at least 60 inches above the ground, with the bottom of the sign no more than 12 inches above the ground.

Proper striping and signage are crucial for ensuring that individuals with disabilities are able to easily locate and use designated parking spaces. It is also important to keep these spaces clear of any obstructions, such as shopping carts or other vehicles.

By following the guidelines outlined by the ADA, property owners and managers can ensure that their parking lots are accessible and welcoming to all individuals.
